Nestled in the heart of East Herzegovina, Bileća has witnessed thousands of years of human civilisation. Illyrians, Romans, Slavs, Ottomans, Austro-Hungarians — each left an indelible mark on this karst land and in the memory of its people.
Prehistory & Illyrians
The area of modern Bileća was inhabited in prehistoric times. The Illyrian tribe of the Autariatae dominated these karst lands, leaving traces in burial mounds and necropolises scattered across Herzegovina. Cave sites and ceramic remains attest to continuous human presence thousands of years before the Common Era.
