Stećci Necropolis on the Shore of Bileća Lake
An artificial necropolis at the southern entrance to Bileća — 462 stećci relocated in 1964 ahead of the valley's flooding, the largest collection of its kind in BiH.
When the flooding of the Trebišnjica valley began in 1964 ahead of the construction of the Grančarevo dam, the stećci scattered across the valley's villages and necropolises had to be saved. At the southern entrance to Bileća, right along the shore of the new lake, an artificial necropolis was formed to which as many as 462 stećci were transferred — the largest such undertaking in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Today the necropolis stands as a quiet memorial to the flooded valley — rows of stone monuments arranged by the water, of varied shapes and decoration, testify to the richness of this region's medieval stone artistry. The site is easily accessible and a frequent stop along the road beside the lake.
