Bileća's old town centre has been designated an ambient ensemble and is protected as cultural-historical heritage. The town centre contains buildings dating from the Ottoman period (15th–19th century) as well as the Austro-Hungarian period (late 19th and early 20th century). The čaršija, with its old shops and craft workshops, was the heart of Bileća's economic life for centuries.
The old part of town also contains the mosque, a witness to the Ottoman period and the spiritual life of the Muslim population. Walking through Bileća's old streets reveals the multi-layered history of a place where different cultures and civilisations have succeeded one another, each leaving its mark in stone and architecture.
