Vučji Do — site of the 1876 battle

A plateau about 6 km from Bileća where, in July 1876, Montenegrin and Herzegovinian forces won one of their greatest victories over the Ottoman Empire.
On the plateau of Vučji Do, just a few kilometres east of Bileća, one of the most significant battles of that era's Serbian-Ottoman wars took place in July 1876. The united Montenegrin and Herzegovinian forces, considerably outnumbered, defeated the Ottoman army under the command of Mukhtar Pasha.
Today the site lies in the border area with Montenegro, and the battlefield is marked by a memorial raised in remembrance of the fallen fighters. Vučji Do remains a symbol of the resistance and unity of the people of this region in the struggle for freedom.
